Gilbert Portanier (1926–2023), born in Cannes, was a key figure in the post-war revival of French art pottery, particularly in the vibrant ceramic hub of Vallauris during the 1950s. After studying architecture in Paris in 1945, Portanier returned to the French Riviera in 1948, where a visit to Vallauris introduced him to the world of ceramics—and to Pablo Picasso.
In 1949, Portanier founded his own studio, Le Triptyque. The artistic energy of Vallauris, amplified by Picasso’s presence, drew many painters and sculptors to the region. Throughout the 1950s, Portanier became known for his innovative approach to surface decoration, skillfully balancing matte and glossy finishes to bring depth and texture to his ceramic works.
