A beautifully crafted stoneware bowl by Heber Mathews, featuring a subtle oatmeal glaze and an incised maker's mark to the base.
Heber Mathews (1905–1959) began his artistic journey as a painter before discovering his passion for ceramics at the Royal College of Art, where he studied under the influential potter William Staite Murray. Mathews went on to teach at Woolwich Polytechnic from 1932 until his death in 1959, ultimately serving as Head of the Art School. It was during his time there that he mentored Hans Coper, who came to him to learn the art of throwing.
Regarded as one of Staite Murray’s most gifted students, Mathews was praised by his mentor as someone who truly understood "the inner meaning of potting". Mathews worked primarily in stoneware and porcelain, often favoring understated forms and quiet, sophisticated glazes like the one seen here.
