Janice Tchalenko (1942-2018) was an ceramicist, designer and artist who bridged the gap between art and large-scale production. She trained as a studio potter in the late ‘60s and initially produced hand thrown tableware in the ‘Leach’ tradition, but then, in 1981, introduced new shapes and bright colours to set a whole new agenda for the studio pottery movement. In 1983, in collaboration with Steven Course at the Dartington Training Workshop, (renamed Dart Pottery in 1984) she produced tableware ranges Poppy, Black Rose and Leopard, were an instant success, winning both the Manchester Prize for Art in Production and the BBC Radio 4 Enterprise Award in 1988. Sadly the pottery closed in 2005 , although it does make a very limited production at Grayshott Pottery in Surrey.
