A beautifully preserved early Rye Pottery Harvest Jug, featuring a light brown glaze and adorned with applied hops and leaves, finished with a classic rope-style handle. This charming piece dates to the 1870s and exemplifies the rustic artistry of Sussex ceramic tradition.

Rye Pottery traces its roots to Cadborough Farm in Rye, where a pottery and brickworks were established in the early 19th century. Under the ownership of Jeremiah Smith, William Mitchell began producing pottery using clay sourced directly from the farm. Mitchell, along with his sons Henry and Frederick, helped shape the unique style that Rye Pottery would become known for.

Frederick Mitchell, in partnership with potter William Watson, developed a distinctive technique of sprigged applied relief decoration. In 1869, Frederick moved the production of decorative wares to the newly established Belle Vue Pottery on Ferry Road in Rye. These designs often celebrated local flora, particularly hops—a significant crop in the region.

After Frederick’s death in 1875, his widow Caroline continued the work, with assistance from William Watson. The pottery remained in the Mitchell family until 1896, later seeing a revival in 1947 when it was purchased and re-opened by brothers Walter and John Cole.

This Harvest Jug is a rare and charming example of 19th-century Sussex craftsmanship—a piece of living history for any collection.
